DSRT Tavistock - 2004 Callouts

FEBRUARY

21 Feb 04: The Team was called out at 1630hrs to search for 6 teenagers overdue on Ten Tors walk training walk on Dartmoor. Mispers located safe and well by Police before teams deployed.

24 Feb 04: 2 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Teams called out at 1000 hrs to assist DSRT (ASHBURTON) in the search for a 26 yr old schizophrenic male, missing from hospital. Misper was seen in Stoke Cannon, but disappeared when a family member was sent to pick him up. Search Dogs tasked with search of farmland around village. Search terminated with nothing found. (Misper later located dead, outside of search area.)

MARCH

10 Mar 04: 2 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Teams tasked to assist HM Coastguard and Exmoor SRT in a search of fields, woodland and railway line for 17 year old teenager from Ilfracombe, She disappeared after being dropped off near a friend’s house after a party. Search terminated with nothing found.

11 Mar 04: Ongoing incident from previous day.
Search of woodland and old railway line where mispers’ boyfriends’ car was seen. Nothing found;

12 Mar 04: Ongoing incident from previous days.
Search of woodland and Tarka Trail area. Nothing found.

15/16 Mar 04: Ongoing incident from previous days.
Search of woodland and Tarka Trail area. Nothing found.

APRIL

04 Apr 04: The Team was called out at 0030hrs to search for 4 ATC cadets overdue on Ten Tors training. Mispers were found safe and well in tents by DSRT search team.

04 Apr 04: Whilst involved in search for previous incident, a further team of 4 Cadets was reported overdue. Mispers located safe and well in tents by Police helicopter. They were assisted back to the RV by a Foot team

MAY

15 May 04: After clearing from the job below team members were tasked to search for another team that was reported as overdue at their evening checkpoint. They were found safe and well by DSRT foot team just short of the checkpoint.

15 May 04: During the Ten Tor’s expedition on Dartmoor one team was reported as overdue at their end checkpoint. DSRT (TAVISTOCK) was placed on Standby to assist colleagues from Okehampton and Tavistock’s own Search Dogs who were carrying out an initial search. They were found safe and well by helicopter.

16 May 04: 1 Search Dog Team requested to assist Exmoor SRT who had been called to search for 50 yr old male despondent in Burnham, Bristol. Misper located by Police in local pub before dog deployed.

23 May 04: 2 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Teams tasked to assist in a joint operation involving Exmoor SRT, DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) and Cornwall SRT in the search for a 35 yr old male suffering with epilepsy that had left home in Stratton the previous morning. He did not return home to take his drugs that evening and was found hanging in woodland near his house by a DRST search team.

24 May 04: 1 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Team requested to assist DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) in the search of fields and farmland for 63 yr old lady suffering from Alzheimer’s, missing from home in Canworthy Water, Cornwall. She was found safe and well by a member of the public in a field, 4 miles from home.

29 May 04: 2 of our Search Dog Teams were tasked to assist DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) and Exmoor SRT in the search for a 20 yr old male that left a pub in Crediton at 2340 hrs and was seen on CCTV heading home but has not been seen since. Search of woods and farmland carried out with nothing found. (See 31st May)

29 May 04: The team was called out at 1915 hrs and tasked to assist DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) in the search for a 29 yr old diabetic schizophrenic woman who went for a walk at 0900hrs but did not return home. She was located, confused but uninjured at Okehampton Railway Station by Police before teams deployed.

31 May 04: 2 of our Search dogs were requested in the continuation of a search for a missing 20yr old man in Crediton last seen on 29 May. Search of woods and farmland carried out. Misper located in river (drowned) by Police Search team..

JUNE

30 Jun 04: The team was requested to search for 48 yr old man overdue at end of orienteering event in the Tavistock area in bad weather and darkness. Misper returned to checkpoint at 2315hr before team deployed.

30 Jun 04: 2 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Teams were requested to assist Exmoor SRT in the search for a 73 yr old lady on holiday in the Holsworthy area with her son from Bradford. The Misper had decided to walk back to the car but failed to arrive. Search Dog Amber first found the mispers shoe, and then located the woman 100metres further on, stuck in a bog. She was very wet, cold and confused but was quickly treated by Search Dog Handler Matt Robertson and his Navigator Dominic Guly. For their efforts in this search they were award a Chief Superintendents commendation

JULY

18 Jul 04: The Team were tasked to search for 33 yr old man missing from home in Plymouth the previous evening. The Misper had telephoned to say “Goodbye” at midnight. SRTs and SARDA searched woodland and coastal paths around Mount Edgcumbe House, south-east Cornwall. Teams stood down after mobile telephone was tracked to Hayle, in north-west Cornwall This was a large scale search which included DSRT (PLYMOUTH), Coastguard, SARDA Dogs and Cornwall SRT.

AUGUST

13 Aug 04: The team, along with 2 Search Dogs was called out in the early hours to search for 40 yr old man missing from campsite. He had left the campsite at 2300 hrs the previous night for a walk and became lost in the mist. He sent a text to say he was lost but OK and at 0530 called the Police. Due to the large search areas we were assisted by DSRT (ASHBURTON). The Police sent out a car and advised him to call again when he heard the Police car siren, which he did. Foot teams and Search Dogs were tasked to search from His last known position, concentrating on tors and rocky areas. The mist cleared and he was able to walk unaided to Powder Mill pottery, where he was collected cold but well by DSRT land rover.

SEPTEMBER

25 Sep 04: 1 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Team was requested to assist DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) in the search for a 39 year old female despondent who did not return home the previous night and was reported missing the following morning. A report was received on the Saturday morning that she had been spotted near the River Exe. Area searched by Police, with nothing found. DRG called to search on the Sunday. A report of a good sighting was received on the Sunday morning that the misper was in Exeter City Centre

OCTOBER

28/29 Oct 04: The Team was called out to search for 8 year old boy who was overdue after playing hide and seek in woodland next to a campsite in North Devon. His Wellington boots were found in the river. An initial search found nothing but during a later search one of the team’s Search Dogs indicated on the north side of the river, but could not cross. The boy was eventually found in woodland by 2 team members (Rhod Davey and Paul Hudson). He had been on the move during the search and was cold and wet but uninjured when found. Due to the nature of the misper assistance was provided by DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) and Exmoor SRT plus Search Dogs from DSRT (ASHBURTON). This was one of our highest profile callouts to date.

NOVEMBER

14 Nov 04: 2 DSRT (TAVISTOCK) Search Dog Teams requested by DSRT (PLYMOUTH) to search for missing 40 year old lady missing from her home in Plymouth since 21 Sep. Search dogs tasked to search woodland and an old fort near her home. Police suspected foul play. (The remains of a female were located approx 9 months later well away from the search areas)
