31 DEC 08 (49)
Due to DSRT (ASHBURTON) being deployed on the incident below the Team was placed on standby for another incident that was developing outside of our patch in the Fernworthy reservoir area. A member of the public reported hearing cries for help. Following initial police investigation it was decided that this was more than likely a false alarm with good intent and the team was stood down.
31 DEC 08 (48)
DSRT (ASHBURTON) requested 2 of our SARDA dogs to assist in the search for two missing walkers who had become lost in the Shipley bridge area. DSRT (ASHBURTON) had been out searching since earlier in the day and with the temperature dropping and light fading it was felt by their search manager the search dogs would be a valuable resource to deploy. As our SARDA handlers arrived on scene and were being briefed the missing couple were located safe and well by a foot team and escorted back to the RV.

Early in the evening 2 of the teams SARDA handlers were requested by DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) to assist in the search for a missing male in the Crediton area of Devon. the 84yo male had not been seen since leaving home earlier in the the day and there was cause for concern over his welfare.
The 2 search dog teams were tasked to search high probability areas in the location of the LKP. They searched late into the night taking in a wide variety of terrains before being stood down. The search was recommenced early the next day and the body of the misper was discovered by a Police TAG. Our thoughts are with the family of the gentleman.

The Team was called at lunchtime to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a despondent male in the Launceston area. As resources were being deployed and search area’s defined the missing male turned up safe and well back at home. This incident was a continuation of the search carried out the previous night by CSRT.
3 DEC 08 (45)
At 1845hrs one of our SARDA search dog teams along with team member as navigator were called to assist Cornwall SRT with an incident on Bodmin moor. CSRT had been called to search for a despondent male who had been seen walking off onto the moor earlier in the day. As search teams were being briefed with search areas our dog handler noticed the misper in a distressed state walking back into the RV. He was quickly treated by members of CSRT and our search dog handler and his navigator. They were then stood down at 2045hrs.

At 0910hrs this morning 3 of our SARDA search dog teams along with DSRT Tavistock members as navigators were requested by DSRT (ASHBURTON) to assist in the search for a missing male in the Woodbury Common area of Devon. The missing male had left home earlier in the morning and there was concern for his welfare.
With both our sister teams from Ashburton and Okehampton deployed to the incident along with our 3 search dogs, Search areas were quickly drawn up and a large scale search commenced. Other resources that took part in this incident include Devon and Cornwall police dog handlers, The police underwater search team, RESCUE 169 from RMB Chivenor and the new coastguard helicopter from Portland.
Our search dogs were stood down at 1730hrs with nothing found.

Two of the teams search dog handlers along with team members as navigators were called to assist Devon and Cornwall Police, DSRT (Okehampton) and DSRT (Ashburton) in the search for a missing woman in Newton St Cyres.
The MISPER was located in woodland close to the village by team member Alex and his search dog Max. She was taken to Devon and Exeter hospital for assessment.

The Teams 5 SARDA search dog handlers along with team members as navigators were called to assist Cornwall SRT late in the evening. They were requested to assist in the search for a missing despondent 24yo male in the Bodmin area. As initial searches were carried out of the areas near Bodmin hospital new information came to light that the misper had been taken to Treliske hospital (Truro) and promptly discharged himself. The search was then relocated to Truro. Whilst our handlers were on route to the new search areas the misper was located and they were stood down. This yet again shows the fantastic working relationship that we enjoy with Cornwall SRT.

The Team’s 5 SARDA teams along with Tavistock members as navigators were called out to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a missing 12yo male in the Minions area of Bodmin moor. The boy was located safe and well whilst members were on route.

At 0900hrs 3 of our Search dog teams were called out to assist DSRT (OKEHAMPTON) in the search for a despondent 55yo male in the Lifton area. Due to the scale of the search areas the rest of the team was called to assist in the search. He was located approx 3k away from the place last seen by a police patrol.

All 5 of our Search Dog teams were placed on standby to assist Cornwall SRT and DSRT (PLYMOUTH) with an incident at Torpoint. The 3 missing children were quickly located by a MOD Police dog handler and our SARDA teams were stood down on route.

Our 5 SARDA teams received a request from Exmoor SRT to assist in the search for an overdue D of E team near Brendon Twogates. Due to the fact that they were traveling back from a training course in the Brecon Beacons they were unavailable to assist in this incident. This is listed for information only

The Team provided its annual rescue cover for the Abbots way walk along with our sister teams from Plymouth and Ashburton. Due to the foul weather the team dealt with various incidents and minor injuries.

As part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Charles Barkwill in the Launceston area in June this year our 4 SARDA teams with Team members as navigators once again assisted Cornwall SRT in searching new areas. They were stood down once these areas had been searched with no result.

The Team along with 2 SARDA teams were called by ambulance control at 2200hrs to assist in the evacuation of a 15yo female with suspected hypothermia and burns to one hand. The Team met with the Ambulance Crew from Tavistock station at Four Winds Car park.
The girl was in a team of 27 from Hayesfield School in Bath and they were located just north of Great Mis Tor. The girl was cold but not hypothermic and the burn to her hand was minor. In agreement with the school team manager who had gone to the campsite it was agreed that it was best to leave her in her tent overnight and take her off the moor in daylight if required. Rescue 169 from RMB Chivernor was also placed on standby. The Team was stood down at 2345hrs.

The team along with 2 of our SARDA dogs and our colleagues from Okehampton, were called to search for two missing men, lost on Dartmoor in thick mist and driving rain. Search teams were dispatched to cover a wide area of the moor in and around the Great Links Tor area. The two men were eventually found sheltering at Hunt Tor and were escorted off the moor by members of the Okehampton section.

Whilst attending the MREW conference in Scotland, two of the Teams Search Dogs along with a Team member as navigator were tasked to assist SARDA Southern Scotland on a callout for a misper close to the conference’s location. NO further details are available at this time.

The team were placed on standby to assist SWAST with the evacuation of an injured female in the Stannon Tor area. The Air Ambulance was able to land near the casualty and evacuate her to hospital. The Team was then stood down on route.

The team along with 4 of our SARDA dogs were called to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a missing 20yr old female in the Callington area. Search teams were dispatched to cover both urban and rural areas whilst our team land rover carried out a search of the roads and nearby Kit hill country park. The team was stood down after a couple of hours when the misper returned home safe and well. Yet again it was a great pleasure to be working closely with our colleagues from Cornwall. It turned into a long day for some of our members who had spent the morning participating in a joint exercise with DSRT (OKEHAMPTON), DSRT (ASHBURTON) and RESCUE 169.

Within a couple of hours of returning from the previous incident the team’s SARDA handlers were put on standby to assist our colleagues from Cornwall SRT in the search for a high risk missing female in the St Austell area. As search plans were being drawn up the misper was located by police enquiries and our dog teams were stood down.

The team along with 3 of our SARDA dogs were called out shortly after 0200hrs today to search for a missing walker whose car had been located in the DNPA visitor centre car park at Postbridge.
The misper, who was visiting the UK from Canada had been reported overdue by relatives in Plymouth at approx 2200hrs. The Police immediately carried out a search of car parks around the moor to try and locate his car. It was eventually located by a police patrol and the team were called to RV at this location.
Search teams were deployed to the north of Postbridge after his phoned was triangulated in the area towards Sittaford Tor. After approx 3 hours of searching in rain and mist, the missing male was located by a foot team in good spirits near Sittaford.
Upon realising he was misplaced the man had done everything right by finding shelter and signaling with his whistle until help arrived. He was walked back to Stannon for extraction by the team land rover and seemed no worse for his unexpected night out on the moor.

As part of the ongoing investigation into incident 23, The Team along with our SAR colleagues from DSRT (OKEHAMPTON), Cornwall SRT, SARDA and Police search teams were today recalled to Launceston to carry out a search of new areas that had been identified.
The search areas which were mainly on the outskirts of Launceston had been selected following ongoing enquiries by the local constabulary into the case of Charles Barkwill. Mr Barkwill was last seen in the town centre on 6th June 08. Following exhaustive searches of the new areas the team was finally stood down at 1900hrs after nearly 9 hours of searching with nothing found.
We were also joined by WESSEX 4×4 RESPONSE who provided a transport support role and enabled search teams to be deployed quickly and efficiently to the areas. This was the first time that we have worked with this volunteer group but we look forward to it being the start of another new working relationship for us.
With over 70 searchers on the ground and other support and control roles being carried out in the search management cell it truly was a huge tasking into this incident and goes to show once again the committed and dedicated approach to missing persons in the south west.

As our SARDA teams were stood down from the previous incident and preparing to head home they received word from a SARDA colleague in Exmoor SRT that we were required to assist them with a callout in the north of the county. As they prepared to deploy to this incident they were stood down. This just goes to show that callouts can be like buses, nothing for ages then they all come along at once!

All 4 of our Search Dog Teams along with team members as navigators were called out to Venford Reservoir to assist DSRT (ASHBURTON) in the search for a despondent 41year old male. As our SARDA teams were deploying the police helicopter arrived on scene and quickly located the missing male. Our search dog handlers then returned to the RV and quickly formed a foot team to help dispatch a stretcher along with vital medical equipment to the casualty site. The casualty was treated on scene by Ashburton’s team doctor and evacuated by air to Royal Devon and Exeter hospital in a stable condition.
14 July 08
Three of our Team members out planning a navigation exercise for our trainees provided assistance to a “lost” D of E team. They had already once pointed them in the right direction after having been approached by them. About an hour later the team members came across the same D of E team, approx 2k away from where they thought they were and heading 180 degrees in the wrong direction. Due to the horrendous weather conditions they contacted the groups instructor and safely escorted them to a road head. This is shown for information only and not listed as a callout.

At 0300hrs our 4 Search Dog teams along with Navigators were called to assist DSRT (PLYMOUTH) in the search for a missing 43 year old male in the Roborough area of Plymouth. As the Dog teams were searching the misper was located by police resources in a car park near the care home.

The Team was called out late into the night to search for 5 walkers who had called the police stating they were lost and a member of their party was injured. Our control point was established at Two bridges and search teams were quickly dispatched onto the moor.
Following further phone calls between the missing party and our search manager we targeted our search into the area near Longaford Tor. The missing party were soon located by Search Dog Catherine. They were evacuated back to Two bridges and the team was then stood down

The Team along with 2 of its SARDA teams were called at 1900hrs to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a missing 78 year old male who was last seen in Launceston on Friday. There was growing concern for his welfare due a medical condition. The Team searched open parkland, back gardens and field systems around the town. We were eventually stood down at 2345hrs with nothing found. BBC NEWS

The Team along with 2 of its SARDA teams were called to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a missing 62 year old female near St Austell. The misper had not been seen since 0630hrs in the morning and there was concern for her welfare.
She was located approx 1K from the place last seen by Search Dog Cavos and his handler Nicki Lyons. She was treated on scene by members from DSRT (TAVISTOCK) and CSRT. She was handed over to the Ambulance service to be taken to hospital for further checks. We wish her a speedy recovery.
This was yet again a fantastic example of the joint agency approach to missing persons in the south west involving elements of DSRT, CSRT, SARDA, D & C Police and South Western Ambulance Service Trust.

The Teams 4 Search Dogs with Team members as navigators were deployed to assist DSRT (ASHBURTON) in the search for a missing 73 year old male at Beer, Devon. Whilst they were on route to the RV the missing gentleman was located by a police officer in a public house approx 4K from the PLS. Other resources involved with this search were coastguard and the RNLI inshore lifeboat.

Only hours after celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Dartmoor Rescue Group at a formal evening event in Plymouth, the Team were called out at 0420hrs to the Leedon Tor area to search for a missing 48yr old male. As teams were deploying into their search areas, information came from the Police that the casualty had been located at Derriford Hospital.

One of our Search dog Teams along with a team member as navigator were called to assist Exmoor SRT in the search for a missing 75 year old female from Dulverton in Somerset. The lady, who had been staying with family in the area had wandered off and was last seen heading in the direction of some local woodland by a member of the public. Our search dog unit was tasked with searching a field system that was bordered by woodland and a river.
Following 4 hours of searching, search Dog Cavos showed a great amount of interest in a particular area but due to the lack of wind was unable to give a fix on it. The Search Dog team then located footprints that matched the footwear the misper was wearing. The area was immediately flooded with foot teams and the lady was located deceased approx 500mtrs from the location of interest shown by Cavos. Our condolences go to her family

During the Ten Tors challenge this year the Team, which is located at Amicombe Hill for the event dealt with a large influx of casualties. After dealing with 1 injured participant on the Saturday we were nearly over whelmed on the Sunday.
Following a quiet start to the day we were suddenly dealing with large amounts of participants requesting water and other medical treatment. A well rehearsed plan was put into place with triage and treatment areas set up. Team medical personnel dealt with a variety of minor injuries ranging from blisters to sunburn.
Throughout this we also dealt with 2 more serious cases of exhaustion/heat stroke and a severe lower leg injury. In all over the weekend we evacuated 24 casualties by land or air. Visit our news page for a full report

Whilst on our annual rescue cover for Ten Tors the Team self deployed to an incident in Tavy Cleave that involved a member of the public who had fallen and sustained lower leg injuries. The incident location was a mere 200mtrs from our checkpoint and on arriving on scene we discovered that the casualty was actually a team members wife.
Following examination by the Team doctor and medical staff it was agreed that air evacuation was needed and following a call to ambulance control the Devon Air Ambulance was dispatched to our location. The casualty was quickly stabilised by DSRT members and Paramedics before being evacuated to Derriford A &E for further treatment. All the Team wishes Rosemary a very speedy recovery.

At 1940hrs our 4 search dog teams, along with team members as navigators were called to assist Cornwall SRT in the search for a missing 80 year old female near St Austell. As they were on route to the location they were stood down. The lady had been located safe and well by a police patrol near Drummers hill.

At 2240hrs our Search Dog Teams were requested by DSRT (ASHBURTON) to assist in the search for a missing 14 year old male in the Woodbury common area of East Devon. The misper had a history of self harm and due to the late hour and weather conditions we deployed 2 dog teams with 2 team members as navigators. Just as they were about to arrive at the RV the call came through that the misper had been located safe and well in Tesco’s superstore at Exmouth.

The misper, who had a history of self harm and was known to like the Saltram area of Plymouth. As the handlers made there way to the RV the misper was located safe and well by Devon and Cornwall police.

The Team were called out at 1635hrs to Beardown farm to search for a 17year old female with Hypothermia. The misper gave their location as Crow Tor so search parties made there way to that location. As members arrived at the given grid there was no sign of the casualty so further areas were searched. After the new areas were completed and no sign was seen of the reported casualty all teams were recalled to the control point for new assignments. As this was happening information came through that the party had managed to self recover back to two bridges. The team was stood down at 2030hrs.

Two of our Search Dog Teams along with Team members acting as navigators were deployed to Bovey Tracey to assist DSRT (ASHBURTON) in the search for a missing 66 year old male. He was believed to be despondent and had left a letter at his home address. As the teams were deploying new information came in and he was located by a police TAG team approx 6K from the place last seen. He was evacuated by Air Ambulance to hospital.

The Team was called out at 1420hrs by South Western Ambulance Services Trust to Wilsworthy range to locate and extract a missing Ten Tors team who were in varying stages of Hypothermia. They had also reported that one of their members was suffering breathing difficulties. We quickly deployed a team with medical equipment to the location given and two of our members located the missing group. Whilst they administered medical treatment the rest of the team followed up with a stretcher and other medical equipment.
As the casualties were being treated we requested air support to evacuate the children to a place of safety. Within 2 mins Rescue 169 from RMB Chivenor was on scene! It turns out that it was dealing with another incident only a few mins flying time away from our location. They evacuated 2 of the severe cases and the team walked the remaining 4 children off the moor.The weather was closing in and the RAF crews displayed some fantastic flying skills for which we are grateful. It was a very busy day as our sister team from Okehampton was also deployed dealing with 2 further incidents at the same time as our one.

For the second time in less than 24 hours we were called out to assist DSRT (PLYMOUTH) at Gutter Tor in the search for a missing D of E team. Team members had just started arriving at the RV when OSCAR 99 located the group near Erme head. They were believed to be mildly hypothermic and were evacuated by helicopter. No further details available.

The Team was placed on standby at 1920hrs to assist DSRT (PLYMOUTH) with an incident in the Gutter Tor area. When Plymouth members arrived on scene and assessed the situation it was found that our attendance was not required. Stood down at 2000hrs. No further details available.

Our Search Dog teams were requested at 0500hrs to assist DSRT (PLYMOUTH) in the search for a missing 15 year old in the Ivybridge area of Devon. Due to the location 1 search dog team was immediately dispatched to the RV whilst our other SARDA teams waited for further information. As Search Dog Matt prepared to deploy the misper was located. No further details available.

The Team was called out at 1645hrs to assist DSRT (ASHBURTON) in the search for a missing 15 year old female at the River Dart Country Park. She had been seen in a distressed state and had fled into woodland when approached.
We were supported by numerous police assets including Tactical Aid Groups (TAG), Traffic units, BCU, SOCO, PCSO’s, CID, Special constables, Police dogs and firearms officers. With nearly 75 officers and about 70 team members deployed on the ground it was a tremendous search effort. The Team was eventually stood down at 0030hrs when all search areas had been completed.
Amongst the specialist resources deployed by DSRT were 3 SARDA search dog teams, 2 Hasty search teams and Ashburton’s water search unit. All these assets were coordinated by the force POLSA, Sgt Mike Rose and we are grateful for his ongoing support. Police enquiries are still ongoing.

Our 4 Search Dog teams were placed on stand by at 0030hrs to assist DSRT (PLYMOUTH) in the search for a missing 10 year old in the Plymouth Area. 1 SARDA team from Plymouth had already been dispatched to the incident and as our SARDA teams were preparing to mobilise they were stood down due to the child being located.

The Team was called out at 1700hrs to the Burrator Reservoir area to search for a missing 10 year old female who had not been seen for over an hour following a school visit to the area.
Search area’s were quickly established and due to the urgency of the search and fading daylight we called our sister teams from Ashburton and Plymouth to assist us. Teams were deployed to search the woodland around the arboretum and out on to the exposed moorland.
The girl was located at approx 1830hrs by 2 members of our hasty team near Narrator brook. Also involved in the search were our 3 SARDA dogs, 1 SARDA dog from DSRT (PLYMOUTH), Oscar 99, Devon and Cornwall Police and members of the public.

The Team were placed on standby to assist DSRT (Okehampton) in a search for a missing male in the Bridgerule area on the Devon/Cornwall border. Whilst preparations were being made regarding the deployment the misper was located by the police and the Team were stood down.

The 4 DSRT (Tavistock) search dogs were put on standby to search for a missing 9 year old child. They were located as information was being gathered. This is recorded for information and not recorded as an incident.

Whilst attending the Search and Rescue Dog Association (England) assessments in the Lake District. The 4 teams search dogs were called to assist SARDA Lakes in a search for a 64 year old man with health problems reported missing from a Wigton nursing home. Found by Search Dog Kaz and Dottie in dense woodland severely hypothermic and transported to hospital.
